Ground Penetrating Radars (GPR) Laboratory is a part of the Radiophysics Department of the Radiophysical Faculty of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University (St. Petersburg, Russia), one of the largest and oldest (founded in 1899) universities in Russia. Some time ago our laboratory used to be called Special Antennas Laboratory. At that time we worked on underground and near ground antennas and antenna arrays, studied the effects of electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering on the accuracy of direction finders, short-range navigation and landing systems. We are still developing various types of antennas, especially ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas for GPR and other applications. We have been working on various aspects of UWB GPR (sometimes also called subsurface radar or georadar) since 1983 and since 1989 it has become an important part of our work. Later our GPR research naturally expanded into a broader field of microwave nondestructive evaluation (microwave NDE). Starting in 1999, in collaboration with the Electrically-Controlled Microwave Antennas Laboratory of our department, we have developed a Millimeter Wave Scanning Radar Sensor for robotics automation and vehicle collision avoidance. Since 2000 we also have been working on low frequency eddy current nondestructive evaluation (eddy current NDE), including development of pipe inspection tools. One of our latest research topics is NDE of composite materials using wideband millimeter wave sensors. We also work on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrodynamic problems especially in the areas of electrodynamic analysis of complex situations and experimental techniques.
